The esmf-trace tool relies on Babeltrace2 (bt2) for parsing CTF (Common Trace Format) traces. Although Babeltrace2 is deployed via model-tools, there is a known issue related to the cpu target when using bt2 from ARE Jupyter Notebooks, see model-tools #20.
At present, this prevents bt2 from being imported reliably in ARE-hosted Jupyter environments. Since notebooks are one of the workflows for interactive analysis, the release team has indicated they will investigate this issue during the week of 16–20 Feb.
I'll provide an instruction to enable esmf-trace to be used from VS Code on Gadi login nodes.
