The Experimental Music Toolbox is currently build on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS "Jammy Jellyfihs". This was the choice given the constraints:

  1. The code must work on a Windows Subsystem for Linux and have NVIDIA GPU support. Currently that constrains us to Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04.
  2. There must be an existing Distrobox image on quay.io/toolbx-images/. That again constrains us to Ubuntu 22.04 or earlier.

The goal is to move to Ubuntu 24.04 "Noble Numbat" as soon as NVIDIA supports it on WSL. The image is less of a constraint; the code does work on the upstream Docker Hub Ubuntu 24.04, but I don't yet know if there's anything in the "toolbx-images" that don't come from the base Ubuntu repositories.

Since we ditched the CUDA and container hosting on WSL, it's safe to move forward to Noble Numbat. Port is in progress.
