How to treat removal of species

Currently we are removing only one species per a timestamp (so sequential) but I wonder if there has been work done that does 'mini mass extinction' so that groups of species are removed based on the specific 'extinction trait/mechanism'? 

This will obviously require that better record is kept with regard who is removed - maybe?
