How to start Geeqie with dark/light theme against the current desktop settings?

There's more than one case where I'd like to force a theme variant.

• My gnome-shell settings (on Wayland) currently switch to dark/light on sunset/sunrise, but I'd like to only open Geeqie with the dark variant.
• With the custom XDG_CONFIG_HOME value, the theme defaults to light, and for testing, I'd sometimes like to use the chosen one.

I haven't found any configuration, command-line option, or environment variable that works.

These work for me:

APPIMAGE_GTK_THEME=Adwaita:dark geeqie

or

GTK_THEME=Adwaita:dark geeqie

None of them work for me. LLMs suggested me using GTK_THEME before I created this question.

I also tried it after disabling Night Theme Switcher and even on new user account but with no effect.

It's on Debian Sid, for the record.

Also I got gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface color-scheme 'prefer-dark', but its scope it too wide.
