API enabled: In Google AI Studio, confirm the key is active and hasn't been restricted by IP or usage quotas
Region restrictions: Gemini API is currently unavailable in some regions — if you're accessing from a country where Gemini isn't supported, the key will fail validation even if it's correct

Hey i have the same issue.
I tried the gemini API from aistudio.google.com itself ; it was free tier . Model was gemini-2.0 flash.
Tried again with Openai key from my friend , still dint work.He had a key for his own project.

Then tried local version:-
i was using webui, had setup the Openrouter API and configured it on settings but whenever im getting at the start screening session it says Configure API key in settings; i tried adding the Other API key too for Together AI but dint work.

edit:- i just noticed the webui doesn't really check if the key is valid , like i removed sections of the key and it still says valid.

edit 2 :- i got the Local version working , just had to set the API key temporarily, don't know why it was not setting up as permanent .
