Adding the ray fan into existing model

Dear Johannes, dear all,

Foremost, many thanks for the great add-on and YouTube tutorials about it!

I wonder if it is possible to add a ray fan into the existing model: e.g. there is a number of meshes, already created using either OptiCore, or by other tools, with defined material properties, like refractive index, and we would like to trace this ray fan through the model. Would it be doable?

this requires what is requested in (the title of) #16

In other words, the meshes need to have all relevant geometric information stored with them, like surface shapes, radii, center thickness,...
Because in Blender, the surfaces are not actually spherical (or even aspheric) surfaces, but triangulated, this is not available automatically and would at least require some interpretation or fitting.
