Running CLN peerswap v5 with CLN @ 8a56ccd (master), this error is printed to the log:

lightningd: JSON COMMAND sendcustommsg: Invalid parameter node_id (should be a node id): token '""'

Previously, a CLN API deprecation / removal caused this.

In #334, validation was added to SendCustomMessage. If the peerID is empty, peerswap should fail with the error failed to send custom message: peerId is empty, so it's unexpected that the command is being executed in lightningd.

For further clarification of the issue, would it be possible for you to attach the relevant peerswap commit and the detailed logs before and after the event?
Also, regarding ElementsProject/lightning#8237, it seems to be an addition of items and remains backward compatible.

False alarm. I ended up accidentally not copying over the v5.0.0-rc plugin binary, so I was still running v4.0rc1!
