With work starting on the modernization of this app I'd like to propose a UI layout change.
The AOSP app allows contacts to be labeled and grouped. However that requires navigation between groups:
I propose this to be handled like tags that can be applied to a contact and filtered by on the main screen via chip components. This way no navigation would be required. The favorite feature could be handled the exact same way. The AOSP app just duplicates contact entries and pins them to the top here:
