Quick Start Guide - Branch Merging

⚠️ READ THIS FIRST if you need to complete the branch merges.

Current Status

✅ 4 branches merged successfully
⚠️ 4 branches need manual conflict resolution

What You Need to Do

Option 1: Use GitHub UI (EASIEST) ⭐

  1. Go to each draft PR:

  2. For each PR:

    • Click "Ready for review"
    • Click "Merge pull request"
    • If conflicts appear, click "Resolve conflicts"
    • Use visual editor to resolve (choose left/right or edit manually)
    • Click "Mark as resolved" for each file
    • Complete merge

Recommended merge order:

  1. PR #5 first (most comprehensive)
  2. PR #1 second (error handling)
  3. PRs #2 and #4 last (review for unique value)

Option 2: Use Provided Script

# Navigate to repository
cd /home/runner/work/Notebook_Studio/Notebook_Studio

# Make script executable (if not already)
chmod +x merge-all-branches.sh

# Preview what will happen
./merge-all-branches.sh --dry-run

# Interactive merge (prompts for each branch)
./merge-all-branches.sh --interactive

# When conflicts occur, resolve manually:
# 1. Edit conflicted files
# 2. git add .
# 3. git commit -m "Resolved merge conflicts"
# 4. git push origin main

Option 3: Manual Merge Commands

# Checkout main
git checkout main
git pull origin main

# Merge one branch at a time
git merge --no-ff --allow-unrelated-histories copilot/uiux-genx-dark-interface

# If conflicts appear:
# - Edit files to resolve (remove <<<<<<, ======, >>>>>> markers)
# - Or use: git checkout --ours <file> (keep main version)
# - Or use: git checkout --theirs <file> (use branch version)

# Complete merge
git add .
git commit -m "Merge branch with conflicts resolved"
git push origin main

# Repeat for remaining branches

Files to Read

  1. MERGE_GUIDE.md - Comprehensive instructions with all details
  2. MERGE_SUMMARY.md - Technical explanation of what was done
  3. BRANCH_CLEANUP.md - How to clean up after merging

After Merging

# Test the application
npm install
npm run build
npm run dev

# Delete merged branches
./delete-branches.sh --review

# Or manually
git push origin --delete copilot/branch-name

Branch Recommendations

Branch Action Reason
PR #5 (dark interface) Merge Most complete UI system
PR #1 (code review) Cherry-pick Extract error handling features
PR #2 (verification) Review May be superseded
PR #4 (UI recommendations) Skip Superseded by PR #5

Why Can't These Auto-Merge?

The older branches were created before recent changes were merged to main. They have "unrelated histories" - Git sees them as separate codebases. This causes conflicts in 15+ files.

Solution: Manual resolution required, but GitHub's visual conflict editor makes it easy!

Need Help?

  • Conflicts confusing? Use GitHub UI - it's visual and intuitive
  • Script not working? Check you're on main: git branch --show-current
  • Stuck? See MERGE_GUIDE.md for detailed troubleshooting

Quick Decision Tree

Do you want this branch's changes?
├─ YES → Try merging via GitHub PR UI
│ ├─ No conflicts? → Great! Click merge
│ └─ Conflicts? → Use visual resolver or manual edit
├─ PARTIAL → Cherry-pick specific commits
│ └─ See MERGE_GUIDE.md section "Cherry-Pick Specific Changes"
└─ NO → Close PR and delete branch
└─ See BRANCH_CLEANUP.md for safe deletion
