ARIA 2 Example 1: why square brackets?

Just wondering why the square brackets around the asterisk for the required fields. I've never seen anyone implement it that way before. Why not just the asterisk?

Okay, so I see they used a square bracket in the published aria example, so you are likely just implementing. I still think it's dorky :)
