While testing Armor Attack (armora,266), I noticed that the game video is blanked during the skipped frames, but the color overlay is not.

Same thing happens with the shifter overlay in games like Pole Position (polepos,372) and Buggy Boy (buggyboy,136).

It also happens with the in-game artwork overlays from Mr. Do's -- tested with the Space Invaders (invaders) artwork.

So far, these haven't been a big deal, but I wanted to mention it here in case the subject comes up later.

Noticed other instances of the black square not covering everything.

When starting Zektor (zektor), a one pixel wide blue line on the far left is still visible.

It won't matter for this game once the latest PR (zektor,0) is merged, but I have seen at least one mention on MAMETesters of the devs fixing a game's display that was one pixel off.

Major Havoc (mhavoc,155) has two blue dots in the lower left that correspond with the blue vector lines drawn during system startup sound.

Can you expand the black square a bit into the overscan or will that possibly throw off the resolution for a fork like GroovyMAME that can switch resolutions on the fly?

  • IIRC, Neo-Geo games were well-known for having stuff in the overscan area so they might be good candidates for testing this.
