Could we talk more about input sources, so the content of an update could be something that isn't just text in this file? We have previously talked about environment variables and about using the original value of the target (or the whole document even) as a possible value to use as part of the output. I suggest we try to be clear about the options for using whole values before we start looking any conditional logic or value manipulation.
