I am not really sure what is the best practice to change styles in magento

ai tells me to override /css/styles.css with custom.css via a local.xml, but this scss dir looks easier to change especially with this _var.scss. Only problem I have such errors compiling default/scss/_framework.scss 23:9 @import default/scss/styles.scss 22:9 root stylesheet

copying lib/compass and putting it in the scss folder, compiles without issues.
