What are .mmcr files for?

I noticed these exist next to my .ptex files, but can't find any information about them in documentation or any issues on here. What are they for?

Those are crash rescue files. They are saved every 15 seconds, and removed when MM is closed correctly. If MM crashes, the mmcr file remains and MM will suggest you recover from that state.

Otherwise I'm personally satisfied to close this issue. With this issue there is a trace online about what they're for at least. :)
