Polling query dependent upon data from mutation

I have a component which performs a mutation. This mutation kicks off a long running process in my API so the response from the mutation is simply an id.

Next I have a polling query which needs to poll based on that returned id from the mutation:

I am finding that the polling query never enables, most likely due to either a re-render or perhaps the logic above. I am wondering if there is perhaps best practice for approaching this type of scenario. I have tried setting external state for the id field but that doesnt seem to help.
