Web Clipper for ChatGPT

Describe feature

I tried using Web Clipper on a ChatGPT chat so - whole page - and it only capture "chatgpt said" and "you said" but none of the actual text. Is there a way to make it work with Chat and I guess other AIs? BTW I can save chats using CTRL-A & CTRL-C then pasting into Trilium so the text is extractable that way and maybe that points to an easy way forward? Thanks.

The Web Clipper's "whole page" mode uses Mozilla's Readability library to extract content, which works well for traditional articles but not for dynamic web apps like ChatGPT. ChatGPT renders the actual chat text inside Shadow DOM or web components, which Readability and the clipper can't access—so only the outer labels like "chatgpt said" and "you said" are captured, not the conversation itself. Manual selection (CTRL-A, CTRL-C) works because the browser's selection API can traverse into Shadow DOM and grab the visible text, which automated extraction can't do in this case reference.

For now, the best workaround is to use manual selection and the "Save selection to Trilium" option in the Web Clipper, or continue with copy-paste. Improving automated extraction for dynamic/shadow DOM content would require significant changes to how the clipper traverses and extracts page content.

I don't see any "Save selection to Trilium" in the Web Clipper.

The "Save selection to Trilium" option appears in the browser's context menu (right-click menu) when you have some text selected on a page. Some users miss it because they don't use the context menu for clipping. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S to save the selected text directly to Trilium details more info.

If you still don't see the option, make sure you're using a supported version of the Web Clipper and that your Trilium instance is running and accessible. If the extension is outdated or you're on a new installation, the official clipper may not work due to backend changes see here. In that case, manual copy-paste remains the most reliable method.
