HTML ZIP Export – Internal Links Make Navigation Pane Disappear? #8692

Hi everyone,
I’m hoping someone can help me understand something. I might be doing something wrong, so apologies in advance if this is obvious.

When I export my notes using the HTML ZIP option, the exported site looks great at first — the left navigation pane works perfectly, and the whole thing feels very close to the actual Trilium interface.

But I ran into something unexpected: Whenever I click an internal link inside one of my notes (a link to another note in the tree), the entire navigation pane disappears and I’m taken to a standalone HTML file with no sidebar. The only way to get the navigation pane back is to manually return to the main index.html.

I’m wondering if I’m missing a setting or doing something incorrectly, because every other web‑based viewer I’ve ever used keeps the navigation pane visible when following internal links. I’ve honestly never seen this odd behavior before (LOL). So my questions are:

Is this expected behavior? Am I overlooking something simple?
Or is this just a really nasty, unforgivable bug?

I really love the idea of having a browsable HTML version of my notebook, so I’m hoping there’s a way to keep the navigation pane visible when clicking internal links.

Oh, and by the way, I noticed something else confusing: If a parent note has no content, it isn’t even clickable in the exported viewer — which makes me wonder if I’m totally misunderstanding how the export viewer is even supposed to work.

Thanks in advance for any guidance!
