Quake 2 RTX- Gamescope halves the framerate #1768

Is there an existing issue for this?

  • I have searched the existing issues

Are you using any gamescope patches or a forked version of gamescope?

  • The issue occurs on upstream gamescope without any modifications

Current Behavior

Gamescope halves the framerate in this title, tested with nested gamescope, Linux build of the game from Steam.

Steps To Reproduce

  1. Launch game without gamescope at your native res, observe the fps ( game has built in FPS counter that can be toggled )
  2. Launch game with gamescope nested, resolution set to your native res. Now observe the fps.

Hardware information

- Distro: Arch Linux
- CPU: 7800X3D
- GPU: 7900 XTX
- Driver Version: Mesa 24.3.4

Software information

- Desktop environment: KDE
- Session type: Kwin Wayland
- Gamescope version: 3.16.1, from Arch repos
- Gamescope launch command(s):

Which gamescope backends have the issue you are reporting?

  • Wayland (default for nested gamescope)
  • DRM (default for embedded gamescope, i.e. gamescope-session)
  • SDL
  • OpenVR

This issue also manifests with DOOM + DOOM II. It can be resolved in both instances by forcing gamescope to composite, either by launching the game with gamescope --force-composition -- %command% or by running gamescopectl composite_force 1 from another terminal while gamescope is running.

@grimshins Thanks, indeed --force-composition solved the issue here with Quake 2 RTX.
