Validating References
In many cases, profiles make rules about the content of references. E.g. the subject of an Observation must be a Patient, and it must be a patient that conforms to a particular patient. In order to test rules like this, the validator must be able to fetch the target of a reference, and test whether the target conforms to the profile.

By default, the validator follows references within the resource it is validating e.g. in a bundle, or to and between contained resources. It does not follow references outside the resource being validated - it does not attempt to validate references, even if an applicable profile makes rules about the reference etc. In order to get the validator to check references to other resources, us the -check-references parameter:

java -jar validator_cli.jar c:\temp\bundle.xml -check-references
Provided with this parameter, the validator only knows how to follow absolute URLs, and it will attempt to. Invalid absolute URLs and any relative URLs will cause validation failures, except see below.

Alternatively, you can ask for the validator to only validate references to one or more specific servers:

java -jar validator_cli.jar c:\temp\bundle.xml -check-references-to http://hapi.fhir.org
Provided with this parameter, the validator will check and enforce references to the nominated server. The parameter can be present more than once. it doesn't matter whether you specify http:// or https:// in the parameter - both will match

Resolution Context
To resolve relative references, you must provide the validator with a resolution context using the -resolution-context parameter, which identifies either a server (http:) or a local folder (file:)
