It would be helpful if the GAIA CLI had a user config or settings file, which would let us set a default model when using commands like gaia chat or gaia llm. I pretty much always use the same model, which I currently have to set each time with the --model option. Not a deal-breaker but gets a bit tedious.

Implemented in #1863. You can now set a default model once instead of passing --model every time:

gaia config set default_model Qwen3.5-35B-A3B-GGUF
gaia llm "hello"        # uses the configured model
gaia prompt "hi" --model Gemma-4-E4B-it-GGUF   # flag still overrides for one run

Stored in ~/.gaia/config.json. Resolution is highest-wins: --model flag > config default_model > each command's built-in default (applies to gaia chat / gaia llm / gaia prompt). Also adds gaia config show|get|set. Review/feedback welcome on the PR.

Good idea — and you were right that there was no built-in way to set a persistent default model; --model per-invocation was the only path. That's now addressed in #1863.

It adds gaia config set default_model <id> (persisted to ~/.gaia/config.json), plus gaia config show / get, and applies a documented, highest-wins resolution to gaia chat / llm / prompt:

--model <X> flag  >  config default_model  >  built-in default

So your use case becomes:

gaia config set default_model Qwen3.5-35B-A3B-GGUF
gaia llm "hello"     # uses your configured model, no --model needed
