recommended way to build in separate directory

What's the recommended way to build the kernel as if O=my_dir/ was passed in?
I use export KBUILD_OUTPUT=my_dir which mostly works, but for the config stage.

I think the recommended way is simply to set O=my_dir/ to the different vng command:

vng O=my_dir/ -b
vng O=my_dir/

But I noticed the second command was not working as expected in interactive mode, see #229.

Note that KBUILD_OUTPUT=my_dir should work for the build, but I didn't test. Not to run the VM so far. → the run part should work now with #229.

(Note that personally, my scripts are not using vng directly, but I used virtme-configkernel O=..., make O=... and virtme-run --kdir ...)
