ENH: provide user facing easy access of global variables

E.g. today I wanted to easily figure out (from a python interpreter rather than the source code) what our default registry URL is. Apparently I couldn't.

I wonder if you all think exposing variables like this would be indeed useful for the end users or we shouldn't bother.

yeap, that's a bit hidden as one usually does a registry.search() and then follows up by digging around in the registry namespace. But that may be just a me problem and the typical user is doing better and thus this can be closed 😅
