Color by user supplied parameter (e.g. timestep) in non-timeline tools

Having 'Color by user supplied parameter' in the Timeline tool is quite useful. To make corresponding displays from other tools, it would be useful to have that option elsewhere, too.

I'll open sub-issues for the cases I'm most interested in.
