IMHO, typical use of this extension is often focused on visual presentation of the showcase applications, the image is the most prominent element.
As such the current alt text is not helpful, as it only repeats the name which is already present anyhow. As a first quick improvement, I would propose to replace that with an empty string (see also ckan/ckan#8932).
I think a field to supply an alt text/description of the image would be the proper solution and a big improvement to the accessibility of the presented information.
