Question: Why ECMAScript and not Posix ERE (i.e., as implemented in gawk)?

As the subject says, why ECMA? I personally find it less intuitive (if any RE can be considered intuitive) than what gawk uses, but that's also probably due to my decades of using gawk.

FWIW, I also don't like perl's RE syntax.
