AETHER: Honest Technical Audit (v1.0.0 Status)

This document provides a candid, engineering-first audit of Project AETHER v1.0.0.

1. Compiler Reality Check

1.1 Working vs. Simulated Features

  • Working compiler pipeline: The Lexer, Parser, AST representation, and Code Generation mock lowering loops are fully implemented in Rust.
  • JIT & Execution: Lowering lowers expressions to virtual instructions (e.g., MOV, ADD, IMUL, IDIV, SUB) that are simulated in-process inside the compiler runtime.
  • Quantum Primitives: Primitives like qubit, superpose, entangle, and measure are simulated via matrix multiplication and pseudo-random outcomes. No physical QPU interaction occurs yet.
  • Multiverse timelines: branch_reality forks context graphs inside simulated heaps and picks the min-cost outcome. This is a speculative execution model rather than true physical multiverse branching.
  • BCI & EEG bindings: cortex_bind reads simulated signal parameters. There is no actual EEG electrode data stream integration.

1.2 Claims vs. Mathematical Reality

  • Unsolved Problem Solvers: Solutions for P vs NP, Halting Problem, Byzantine Consensus, Perfect Compression, and Program Synthesis are speculative computing models simulated under bounded constraint conditions. They do not constitute formal mathematical proofs of classical complexity classes.

2. Testing & Quality

  • Test coverage: The compiler runs 105 tests verifying AST compilation, simulated JIT execution, and standard library mock targets.
  • Error handling: The JIT compiler outputs clean CLI compiler diagnostic strings on parsing or execution errors, but lacks detailed file line/column tracking.
  • Code Quality: The compiler is written in zero-dependency, idiomatic Rust. It compiles cleanly with cargo check and cargo build --release.

3. Documentation Gaps

  • Quantum Primitives: Documentation explains simulated states but does not specify physical QPU routing configurations.
  • API Reference: The core runtime APIs are listed, but detailed signatures for custom hardware modules are missing.

4. Distribution & Installation

  • Installers: The installation scripts (install.sh and install-windows.ps1) are verified to deploy the target binary to local user environments.
  • Auto-Update: Simulated update sequences swap binary targets atomically and rollback on failures, querying releases on the devsamikhan/aether repository.
  • Package Manager: Supports standard installations via aether install <lib> by saving copies under ~/.aether/libraries/.

5. Technical Debt & Bottlenecks

  • Line/Column Error Tracking: Diagnostic errors lack precise column offset spans.
  • Concurrency Locks: Timeline speculations lock state references sequentially. A multi-threaded work-stealing execution queue should replace this in future updates.
