Why no EV METER in NORMAL mode? #284

Seems to be working now. I left the MAINS MET disabled and configurered EV METER for Eastron3f on channel 101. That did the trick. Now I have a fully functional EVBox Businessline, only future proof. Very happy and impressed. Still, the need to configure SMART mode keeps bugging me. |

Hi,
This is my first post here, so something about me to start of. I am an almost retired software engineer with an electrical engineer degree. I live in the Utrecht area in The Netherlands with my wife. Our 4 kids have long ago decided to venture out on their own, resulting in 2 grandkids sofar. And a few full-stack software engineers looking over my shoulder. My current EV is a Tesla Model Y (after two model S's) that I charge at home on my drive. I stumbled upon this project after searching for alternatives since EVBox decided to pull the plug on my charging station by the end of this year. Good moment to start a DIY project. And so far it has been a joy. I'm impressed with the amount of work that has been put into this already and the quality of it.
I have completed the hardware part of converting my soon-to-be-bricked EVBox BusinessLine charger to SmartEVSE. I ripped out most of the inner parts, leaving the contactor, Mennekes socket and the LED ring in place. I installed the SmartEVSE V3 controller, card reader and a supported kWh meter (Eastron SDN72D-M). It's a 3-phase 3x16A job. I have solar but leave that out of the project for now.
Now I am in the process of configuring in the kWh meter but find I need to set mode to Smart. Once I have done so, I see two menus where I can/must configure the meter: under the MAINS MET menu and subsequently also under the EV METER menu. I do not see the reasoning behind this. SMART mode does not seem to apply to my use case. Why can I not do EV METER while in NORMAL mode? Now I have configured the Eastron twice with its newly configured modbus address 101. The SmartEVSE does present the data from the meter now just fine, but my car is now limited to 6A instead of 16A.
What am I missing here? Should I leave EV METER or MAINS MET disabled, and if so, which one? Or is there something not properly working in my setup?
