I love the controller controls when the camera is attached to a character, then it makes sense that the right stick rotates the camera around the character.
However, when detaching the camera, this becomes very confusing. Then, it is still rotating around some invisible spot in the world, which often leads to crazy camera jumps.
It would be much better if as soon as the camera is detached, make it such that the right stick controls camera rotation only. Then, the zoom in/out could turn into "move camera up/down" instead.
If that isn't possible, then maybe offer an option to disable the pitch control based on whether the camera is attached or not.
