\citet{Maxey1983} and \citet{Gatignol1983} carried out a rigorous derivation of the equation of motion of a small isolated particle by a perturbation method. Many forces are exerted on a particle among which: the buoyancy, drag, history, added mass, Tchen or even lift force. Within the framework of a solid particle in a movement of pure translation in air, and whose particle density is much higher than air density ($\rho_p >> \rho_f$), then the forces exerted on the particle are reduced only to the forces of buoyancy and drag.

The buoyancy force comes from the density difference between the particle and the surrounding air so it takes the form:

In the case of a free-falling granular, the gravity force will be one the major contribution to the movement of particles.
For its part, the drag force is due to the gas viscous friction on the surface of the particle. It is expressed as follows:

When the Reynolds number increases this relation is no longer valid, indeed at higher value the flow are no longer symetric (likes oscillating boundary-layer flows, turbulence, ...). So is necessary to model the drag coefficient from experimental results or numerical simulations.
There are many correlations to extend the drag coefficient, the semi-empirical correlation defined by \citet{Schiller1935} is one of the most used, it is written in the following form:

The figure \ref{fig:schiller} shows the comparison of Stokes' law \eqref{eq:stokes} and the equation of \citet{Schiller1935} \eqref{eq:schiller_naumann}. Beyond unity, Stokes' law \eqref{eq:stokes} no longer follows the experiment while that of \citet{Schiller1935} is in good agreement with the experimental results, except when we reach the point of dropout.
For dense environments \citet{Wen1965} propose the correlation,

The correlation of \citet{Wen1965} is an extension of \citet{Schiller1935} for dense media.

This last correlation is used for the numerical simulation of dense fluidized bed. It was validated by a comparisons of bed heights obtained numerically and those measured on a pilot reactor. Figure \ref{fig:alpha_Cd_100} shows the evolution of the drag coefficient as a function of the volume fraction of the particles. Following Ergun's law, the drag coefficient increases with the volume fraction following Wen \& Yu's law until reaching a maximum close to $\alpha_p \thickapprox $ 0.5 for the Reynolds numbers of 10 and 100. When the flow is fast the coefficient of drag increases rapidly but remains governed by the law of Wen \& Yu.

The drag force apply on an isolated particle is not the same when you have several close particle (clustering) due to the crowding effect. Currently, this effect appear only with the volume fraction. So in numerical point of view that means it's an average in cell, in reallity the friction of the air exerted will be different on each particle, we must be aware this is an hypothesis and could be gives unaccurate results for hightly anisotropic particle media and polydisperse cases.

In order to validate the terminal fall velocity, we compare the solution obtained numerically to an experiment conducted by \citet{belkhelfa2011}. His experience shows the experimental evolution of a free fall velocity of a spherical water drop, with the consideration the evaporation is relatively weak (see Figure \ref{fig:belkhafa_chute}). We observe that the drop of diameter of 364 \unit{\mu m}, reaches its final velocity over a distance of 50 \unit{cm} and the drop with a diameter of 454 \unit {\mu m} reaches it around 100 \unit{cm}. The prediction is satisfactory (see Table \ref {tab:prediction_vitesse}), which validates the previous hypotheses on the equation of the trajectory.

In conclusion, the prediction of the terminal velocity depends on several parameters, namely: the nature of the particle, the physical properties of the continuous and the dispersed phases and the Reynolds number which is directly linked to the drag coefficient.
