if there are a lot of pages, it's nice to add a count to the pagination, like 2 of 25. Might be possible to do with counters with ::page specifying counter-increment?

This is definitely a common pattern - e.g., it's often used to help users know how many product list pages they've navigated.
It also becomes more useful as the # of pages increases, whereas scroll-markers might be enough for cases where # of pages is small enough for the user to easily count.
