Counterfeit MicroSD cards and similar scams are becoming more widespread due to current events causing a sharp rise in costs of memory & flash storage. Please be extra vigilant when shopping for MicroSD cards.
20+
Counterfeit MicroSD cards and similar scams have become increasingly common as memory and flash storage prices have risen due to various market factors. While genuine MicroSD cards have risen in price, counterfeit cards often remain suspiciously cheap, making them appear to be attractive bargains.
21+
When shopping for a MicroSD card, be cautious of prices that seem too good to be true. **A significantly lower price than comparable products from reputable retailers can be a warning sign of a counterfeit or misrepresented SD card.**

#### Fake capacities and performance
5960

60-
Fake MicroSD cards will often use low-quality flash memory with a fraudulently spoofed capacity. What will appear as a 512GB MicroSD card on your computer may actually be 64GB instead or maybe even less. Their performance is often quite poor too, not meeting their advertised read and write speeds. Its common these days to see cards marked as 2TB being sold for bargain basement prices, these are absolutely not genuine and users have reported their real capacity being as low as 8GB.
61+
Counterfeit MicroSD cards often use low-quality flash memory (typically factory rejected or QC rejected parts) and report a fraudulently inflated capacity. A card advertised and detected as 512GB may in reality only contain 64GB of storage, or even less. Performance is often poor as well, with read and write speeds falling far below the advertised specifications.
6162

62-
The only way to identify whether or not your MicroSD card is fake is to test it. There are instructions at [the bottom of this page](#testing-a-microsd-card) detailing how you can do just that. Looking at the MicroSD card's properties will not reveal the fraud. Similarly, reformatting or repartitioning a fake MicroSD card will not "fix" its capacity. The card has specifically been manufactured to always show its fake capacity. It cannot write data past its real capacity and thus should not be trusted with important data. Even if you know its real capacity, you cannot guarantee that your data is safe.

The MicroSD's chip has specifically been programmed to always show its fake capacity even after reformatting. Once the card's real storage limit is exceeded, data may become corrupted, overwritten, or lost. Even if you discover the card's true capacity, it should not be trusted with important data.

### Fake brands that don't exist
6972

70-
Often called "no-name" or "generic" MicroSD cards, these are MicroSD cards sold under random brand names, sometimes made to sound similar to reputable brands (e.g., "SanDian"). These cards are typically the same as counterfeit cards, encompassing low-quality flash storage and/or a fake capacity and should also be avoided. It's always important to only purchase brands you recognise.

Often called "no-name" or "generic" MicroSD cards, these are cards sold under invented brand names with little or no established presence in the industry. Some are designed to resemble reputable brands, while others use entirely fabricated names.

No-name MicroSD cards are commonly included with preloaded Nintendo DS flashcarts and likewise use low quality flash storage and will typically stop working or become defective in a short period of time.

Some commonly seen examples include Microdrive, Microdata, SanDian, ShanDian, Somnambulist, Olevo and numerous other invented brands continue to pop up on online marketplaces.

### Brandjacking

### Brand Fraud
91+
92+
Brand Fraud is a tactic used by counterfeiters to sell a product fraudulently using the brand of a real company when that brand does not sell the product in question.
93+
This tactic fools consumers into believing they are buying a name-brand product. This is very common on online marketplaces, and the quality & reliability of these cards are often poor as well, often with a fake capacity.

Lenovo branded MicroSD cards sold on most online marketplaces should be treated with extreme caution, as counterfeits of these are widespread.

Some companies legitimately sell MicroSD cards, but counterfeit versions of non-existent models are also commonly found online. These often use generic designs or copy the appearance of products from other brands, such as SanDisk-style "Lenovo" cards or Samsung-style "SONY" cards.

There are some cases where a brand will sell MicroSD cards, but counterfeit cards posing as non-existent models exist on online marketplaces, usually bearing a generic design or the design of another brand. It is advised to check the manufacturer's website to ensure they sell the displayed model if you are unsure.

If you are unsure whether a MicroSD card model is genuine, check the manufacturer's website to confirm that the model exists and matches the product being advertised.
