1.0-alpha is ready for testing

The new version modernises the app to latest tools (GTK4, libadwaita, Flatpak) and tries to address many issues that accumulated over the years. The timer internals have been rewritten, UI has been refreshed, built-in system integrations makes the app more usable without the GNOME Shell extension.

What's not ready in the 1.0-alpha?

The GNOME Shell extension is not compatible yet. It will be moved to its own repo and distributed through extensions.gnome.org website again. It's a mandatory change, because the extension can't be bundled with Flatpak.

gnome-pomodoro-tracking Has not been updated for the new version. Plan is to built in the integrations for easier setup.

Translations are not ready yet, so you may need to specify English language for now.

Stats data will be migrated. I advise quitting the current version of gnome-pomodoro for database to save its changes. I till copy the data to ~/.var/app/io.github.focustimerhq.FocusTimer, so you can go back to use the old version.

I installed this and opened it on a KDE system.

Questions:

• Does this have system tray support? Original version had that, that's what I liked about this app (especially the informative circle icon). is it not visible because I am on KDE?

Bugs:

• Screen overlay during breaks:
  • Once the break time is over, the screen overlay pops open once again, even though I had exited that prior.
  • Also, even after the break is over, the main UI still shows the button "Open screen overlay", I believe this is a mistake. Moreover clicking that opens something invisible that I have to dismiss with Esc. See logs during this:

Does this have system tray support?

No - at least not now. It will have support for GNOME Shell once the extension is ready. I want to try adding https://github.com/AyatanaIndicators/libayatana-appindicator-glib to bring back the indicator for other desktops - not sure if it allows modifying the menu / icon or is it static only.

A preference page can have "reset" and/or "defaults" button to restore prior or default settings.

I'm thinking about adding "Quick Setup" in the bottom left corner of the Preferences window. Because, users tend to have different objectives: Productivity or Health. I think that reset to defaults makes more sense for bigger apps...

I've updated the Flatpak bundle in the original post to include translations and last fixes:

• translations for Georgian, Swedish and Indonesian
• hide button for opening screen overlay manually
• add extra cycle when stopping an uncompleted long break
• fix the start-time of a time-block when selecting a state manually instead of confirming the start of pomodoro/break
• fix progress-bar animation glitch when screen overlay closes
• fix session indicator animation glitch on stopping a long-break
• do not play notification sounds when restoring session on app startup
• fix displaying a checkmark for a format selection in a variable popover (in edit action window)

Updated the Flatpak bundle (build3). The updates:

• Fix desktop icon not working
• Improved the command-line interface
• Escape stats placeholder on first opportunity
• In Flatpak, removed broad permission to access home directory --filesystem=home:ro

In the new version there's no --no-default-window flag. The app uses --gapplication-service to start in background. Flags for controlling the timer only control the timer, will not open the window. --status doesn't print anything when using Flatpak, works if app is installed in traditional way (GLib/Flatpak bug?).

Updated the Flatpak bundle (build 4). Updates:

• App rebranding
• Improved logic for notifications - fixes screen overlay not opening after some use
• Minor UI tweaks
• Updated Georgian, Swedish and Polish translations

Due to rebranding, the app will try to import data from the old gnome-pomodoro app. Will omit data for 1.0-alpha previously posted.

There may be some issues with reassigning keyboard shortcuts from the org.gnomepomodoro.Pomodoro to io.github.focustimerhq.FocusTimer. To me it looks like an issue of Global Shortcuts API implementation; it gets there in the end - needs some prodding...
