Materials Science: Student Instructions

Table of Contents

During a Session

  1. Open Zoom and ensure mic settings are correct
  2. Open Firefox Reality via Viveport
  3. Log into provided Komodo account
  4. Go to session and enter it
  5. Learn to use Komodo in VR
  6. Exit the session
  7. Learn to use Komodo in Spectator-only Mode

Open Zoom and ensure mic settings are correct

  1. Access the provided Zoom session.
  2. Change the sound output to Headphones (# - Rift S)
  3. Change the mic input to Headset Microphone (# - Rift S)

Launch Firefox Reality via Viveport

  1. Open Viveport
  2. Make sure you are on the Library tab
  3. Choose Firefox Reality

Log into Komodo

  1. In Firefox Reality, go to "komodo-dev.library.illinois.edu"
  2. Or type tiny.cc/kmd0 in the address bar
  3. Enter your Illinois email address
  4. Enter your Komodo account password
  5. Press Login

Go to the session and enter it

  1. Choose MSE 404
  2. Choose the relevant session by clicking on the words (not the icons):
    1. Miller Indices 2021-09-28 and 2021-09-30
    2. Molecular Dynamics 2021-09-28 and 2021-09-30
  3. Choose > START NOW
  4. Wait for the initial loading process to end.
  5. Press [ VR ] in the lower right corner.
  6. Put your VR headset on.

Learn controller basics

  1. Make sure the A/B/X/Y buttons are on the inside and the thumbsticks are on the outside.
  2. Place your index finger on the trigger (the single large, round button that faces away from you).
  3. Place your middle finger on the grip (the single, large round button on the sides).
  4. Push A/B/X/Y with your thumb.
  5. Push the thumbstick with your thumb like a button.
  6. Push the hamburger button and the Oculus button with your thumb.

Show the menu

  1. If needed, switch to a right-handed menu by pressing the Komodo menu button (Y) on your left controller.
  2. Press the Komodo menu button (B) on your right controller to switch back to a left-handed menu.
  3. Press either menu icon to show and hide the menu.

Use the menu

  1. Point your hand at the menu so that you see a cursor.
  2. Press the trigger button to select an item or activate a button.

Reset your position

  1. Choose Settings > Starting Location (the house icon).

We recommend doing this because the starting position may have been affected by any scrolling motion done before you entered VR.

Look for others

Wave to your peers!

Teleport

  1. Press and hold the thumbstick like a button.
  2. Aim at the floor.
  3. Let go of the thumbstick.

Calibrate your height

  1. Teleport at least two times before calibrating your height. [1]
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Press Calibrate Height if you are able to stand.
  4. If not, press the [ \/ \/ ], [ /\ /\ ], [ \/ ], or [ /\ ] buttons until you are at a comfortable height.

Snap turn (rotate your view)

Quickly flick the thumbstick left or right.

Move and rotate a model

  1. Place your hand in a model.
  2. Squeeze the grip button.
  3. Move your hand to move the model. [2]
  4. Let go of the grip button.

Stretch a model

  1. Place both hands in a model.
  2. Squeeze both grip buttons.
  3. Move both hands.
  4. Let go of both grip buttons.

Lock and unlock a model

  1. Open your menu
  2. Select the padlock icon to the left of the model name. [2]

Show and hide a model

  1. Open your menu
  2. Select the open/closed eye icon to the left of the model name.

Check your connection status

  1. Open your menu
  2. Select "People"
  3. Make sure the status says "Connected ()".

Exit the session

  1. Press the hamburger button on your left controller.

Learn to use Komodo in Spectator-only Mode

Learn keyboard movement controls

  1. Use W / A / S / D to strafe (move forward, left, back, right)
  2. Use Q / E to rotate left / right
  3. Use 2 / 3 to rotate up / down

Learn mouse movement controls

  1. Drag the middle mouse button to pan up / down / left / right
  2. Scroll in the window to quickly move forward / back

Learn limitations of spectator-only mode

  1. The following actions are unimplemented:
    1. Moving a model
    2. Scaling a model
    3. Drawing
    4. Erasing
  2. Keep in mind that locking, unlocking, hiding, and showing models is synchronized for everyone.

Footnotes

[1]: due to a bug in v0.4.1, you will need to teleport twice before doing any height calibration to land at the correct height. Our apologies.

[2]: If you can't move an unlocked model, it might be because it is inside a locked model. This is a known issue. A recommended workaround is to hide the locked model, moved the unlocked model, and then show the locked model again. Our apologies.
