Context Facilitate a direct command-line based approach to access and managing Gitpod workspaces from desktop.
Owner Product - @loujaybee / Tech - @akosyakov
Value Facilitate an entirely desktop based flow for interacting with Gitpod. Useful for times when a user just needs access to the workspace purely with a terminal rather than via the browser. Also facilitates programmatic access of Gitpod and automation.
Acceptance Criteria - A CLI is created and distributed to users
- The CLI is fully documented (including help/man pages and commands)
Growth Area Onboarding / Activation & Retention
Persona(s) Vim Users
Hypothesis Providing direct access to Gitpod workspaces will reduce friction for users who just want direct CLI / terminal access to their workspace.
Measurement Increased usage with Gitpod via the CLI.
In scope - CLI access to Gitpod
- Distribution of the Gitpod CLI
Out of scope - Launching VS Code desktop from the desktop directly
Complexities JetBrains IDE's can execute a desktop flow via JetBrains Gateway, with VS Code Desktop, we'll need to facilitate that directly from the CLI, or from VS Code Desktop itself.
Latest Update 01.03.2022 - Epic created by @loujaybee, needs review by @akosyakov and co.

The SSH feature would be more useful if there is an API (and/or) CLI that can start the workspace. for example, I used Google Cloud Shell before and it has both of them, I can easily start and connect to it via SSH with IDEs without opening the web console.
