Pie menus (or radial menus) are a nice way to provide easy access to a group of functionality.
I will be using blender's Pie menus as an example, as I think they are excellent UX wise.
A common action when working in 3D is to switch to a particular view, i.e Side/Top/Front/etc.
These views are very intuitive to switch between in blender, with the help of it's ~ (tilda key) shortcut. Pressing ~ brings up a wheel with all the possible views the user can switch to.
All the user has to do is
Being able to rebind this to the mouse side button is very convenient for easy access.
Alternatively if the user does not want to hold the key, they can just tap the ~ key to keep the menu open, and click on the correct option to select it.

This was only an example of one interaction that is possible with pie menus.

Another example is using it for switching between the Select/Move/Rotate/Scale modes in the main viewport.
The Pie menus could be widely applicable in different contexts in different windows and will help with easily accessing commonly used actions in an intuitive way.
