What version of Go, VS Code & VS Code Go extension are you using?

  • Run go version to get version of Go from the VS Code integrated terminal.

    • go version go1.16.6 linux/amd64

  • Run gopls -v version to get version of Gopls from the VS Code integrated terminal.

    • Command 'gopls' not found, but can be installed with:
      sudo apt install gopls

  • Run code -v or code-insiders -v to get version of VS Code or VS Code Insiders.

Describe the bug

A clear and concise description of what you expected to happen.

When debugging a single test function in a *_test.go file by clicking the debug test hovertext above the function, global variables are not displayed even though the launch.json file sets this to true. However, global variables are shown if I instead go to the Run and Debug side bar and start debugging there while having the test file open.

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. In a launch.json configuration, add "showGlobalVariables": true
  2. Set a breakpoint somewhere in the test function you want to debug (make sure there are global variables that you might actually see if you were debugging)
  3. Debug the test you added a breakpoint to by clicking the "debug test" hovertext
  4. Notce that global variables aren't shown in the debugging pane

This is a dup of #855. 'debug test' does not use launch.json settings. You can however set this in settings.json (:

It is unlikely that we would remove this limitation in the near future, but what can we do to make this experience less confusing? Would a logging message that says something like launch.json is ignored, use setting.json or a hover message over debug test do the trick? We welcome any other suggestions. Thank you.

I think the logging message would be helpful. I would actually prefer to use settings.json for most of my debugging settings and find the fact that VS Code basically pushes you into setting up yet another json file to be very annoying.
