PureShare is a partially implemented file-sharing platform built with Next.js (App Router), TypeScript, Supabase, AWS S3, and Clerk.
Core flows that are implemented end-to-end:
- Create share links with optional password and expiration.
- Upload image files via S3 presigned URLs.
- View a share and download individual files or all files as ZIP.
- Authenticated dashboard for listing/managing user-owned shares.
Core areas still incomplete or inconsistent:
- Password-protected shares are not fully enforced across all file-access endpoints.
- Security middleware/utilities exist but are mostly not wired into runtime request paths.
- No DB migrations/tests in repo; several docs are outdated relative to code.
- Lint currently fails and production build cannot complete in this environment due Google Fonts fetch dependency.
- Frontend/UI: Next.js App Router pages + React client components.
- Server/API: Next.js route handlers under
app/api/**. - Auth: Clerk (
@clerk/nextjs) for user auth/session on dashboard and user APIs. - Database: Supabase Postgres (
shares, filesinferred from code types). - Object Storage: AWS S3 for uploaded file blobs.
- Share creation
- Client calls
POST /api/upload/create. - API validates payload (Zod), generates share link, hashes optional password, inserts share row in Supabase.
- Client calls
- File registration + upload
- For each file, client calls
POST /api/upload/files. - API verifies share status, inserts file metadata row, returns S3 presigned PUT URL.
- Client uploads file directly to S3 using returned URL.
- For each file, client calls
- Share access
- Client calls
POST /api/share/[id]/verify. - API validates link, checks expiry, optionally checks password.
- Client calls
- File retrieval/download
GET /api/share/[id]/filesreturns file metadata + S3 presigned GET URLs.GET /api/share/[id]/download/[fileId]returns one presigned download URL.GET /api/share/[id]/download-allstreams ZIP generated server-side from S3 objects.
- User dashboard
- Clerk-protected routes read user-linked share rows (
user_id) and expose stats/list/update/delete operations.
- Clerk-protected routes read user-linked share rows (
- Browser → Next API: share creation, metadata registration, access verification, downloads orchestration.
- Browser → S3 (direct): file upload via presigned PUT URL.
- Next API → Supabase: metadata reads/writes with service-role client.
- Next API → S3: presigned URL generation + server-side ZIP assembly.
- Landing/home at
/with animated hero and CTA to/upload. - Upload flow page at
/upload:- Drag/drop file selection.
- Optional password and expiration selector.
- Upload progress and generated share-link display.
- Share view page at
/share/[id]:- Password prompt UX.
- File grid, image previews, single download, download-all ZIP.
- Marketing/legal pages:
/about,/privacy,/terms.
- Dashboard pages (Clerk-protected):
/dashboardoverview stats + recent shares./dashboard/sharesfiltered list + delete/copy/open actions./dashboard/settingsaccount info panel.
- Two separate home experiences exist (
app/page.tsxandapp/(marketing)/page.tsx) indicating design/route direction split. - Some footer links point to pages not present (
/pricing,/help,/contact). - Several advanced UI components exist but are not integrated into active route flows.
- Upload/share endpoints:
POST /api/upload/createPOST /api/upload/filesPOST /api/share/[id]/verifyGET /api/share/[id]/filesGET /api/share/[id]/download/[fileId]GET /api/share/[id]/download-all
- User/share management endpoints:
GET /api/user/sharesGET /api/user/statsPATCH /api/shares/[id]DELETE /api/shares/[id]
- Operational endpoint:
GET /api/health(Supabase + S3 check + feature flags)
- Password verification is performed on
/verify, but downstream file endpoints do not bind verification state to a session/token. - Rate limiting/cors/security helper modules are implemented but not broadly applied in route handlers.
proxy.tswith Clerk middleware protecting:/dashboard(.*)/api/user(.*)
- Basic response security headers in middleware.
- Comprehensive security middleware module exists (
lib/middleware/security-headers.ts) but is not integrated into global middleware flow. - Rate limiting module exists (
lib/middleware/rate-limit.ts) but is not applied to upload/download/auth critical endpoints.
sharestable fields used:id,share_link,password_hash,expires_at,created_at,file_count,user_id,title
filestable fields used:id,share_id,filename,size,mime_type,s3_key,uploaded_at
- Relational usage:
sharesqueried withfiles(*)joins for dashboard.- Comments assume cascading delete from
sharestofiles.
- No SQL schema/migration files were found.
- Database constraints/indexes are not version-controlled in this codebase.
- TypeScript strict mode enabled.
- Zod validation used for core upload/share inputs.
- Share passwords hashed with bcrypt.
- Clerk integration for authenticated user features.
- Presigned S3 URLs avoid exposing direct bucket writes.
- Centralized API response helpers and typed API/database interfaces.
- Password-protected share bypass risk
/api/share/[id]/verifychecks password, but/filesand/downloadendpoints do not enforce post-verification state.- Practical effect: knowing the share link may be enough to retrieve files even when password is set.
- No transactional integrity for file count updates
- File insert + share
file_countincrement are separate operations. - Concurrent uploads can produce incorrect counters.
- S3 key collision risk per share
- S3 key uses sanitized filename path (
uploads/{shareId}/{filename}). - Same filename uploads can overwrite object content.
- Security/CORS/rate-limit utilities are mostly unused in active request flow.
- Environment validation utilities are not invoked at startup.
- Supabase clients fall back to placeholder values, which can mask misconfiguration.
- No automated tests present for critical security and data flows.
- Docs and claims are partially stale/inaccurate vs current code reality.
npm run lintcurrently reports errors/warnings (including purity and unescaped-entity issues).npm run buildfailed in this environment due blocked Google Font fetch (Bricolage Grotesque).
- Anonymous share creation supported.
- Optional password per share.
- Expiration timestamp per share.
- Multi-file uploads (image-focused defaults).
- Individual file download.
- Bulk ZIP download.
- User share metrics (total/active/expired).
- Share listing with status filters.
- Share deletion.
- Share update API supports title/password/expiration extension.
- Health endpoint with DB/S3 checks.
- Feature flags for rate limiting/email/monitoring availability.
- Wired rate limiting on public upload/download endpoints.
- Email workflows (Resend dependencies exist but no active implementation).
- Cleanup scheduler/cron implementation in runtime.
- Analytics/tracking implementation despite UI copy references.
README.mdreferences setup paths and capabilities not fully aligned with current implementation.PRODUCTION-PLAN.mdreflects older JWT/auth assumptions and does not match Clerk-first runtime.CLERK_*docs exist and generally align with migration direction, but some paths and historical notes differ from present repository layout.
PureShare has a functional MVP core for temporary file sharing with S3 + Supabase and a modern UI surface, plus early dashboard capabilities for authenticated users. It is not yet production-hardened due enforcement gaps (especially around protected share access), missing test coverage, and partial integration of security/operational controls.
If treated as current maturity:
- Functional MVP: Yes.
- Production-ready security posture: Not yet.
- Architecture foundation for scale: Reasonable baseline, needs hardening and data/ops rigor.
