The src/cli.ts change is correct, but the PR is red because one of its own new tests cannot pass in CI.
Failing test — test/cli.test.js:304 (attach --rationguard --rebuttal=log forwards the flag without warning)
Reproduced locally at dbb4b99 with npm test: 1 !== 0 at cli.test.js:310. Mechanism: the test passes --rationguard with neither --rationguard-bin nor a rationguard binary on PATH. attach() resolves the binary before any tmux side effect (src/attach.ts:278-280), and resolveRationguardBin throws rationguard not found on PATH … (src/attach.ts:205-209), so the CLI exits 1. The three sibling tests in the same file do not hit this path (the first exits 2 before attach(); the other two omit --rationguard). This is why test (22|24|26) all fail.
Fix: give the happy-path test an executable override, the same way the existing suite does — e.g. --rationguard-bin=${stubs.dir}/rationguard as in test/attach-branch-gaps.test.js:204, or --rationguard-bin=/bin/true. No change to src/ is needed.
Verified the rest against the tree:
src/cli.ts:245-249—--rebuttalvalidation runs beforeattach()is called (:262), so the "no tmux side effect" claim in the body holds;rebuttalis otherwise passed through unchecked at:268, so the gap existed.src/cli.ts:252-258— warnings key offflags['rationguard'] !== 'true', matching howrationguard:is derived at:267.- Changelog fragment name
fixed-attach-rebuttal-validation.mdfollows the<category>-<slug>.mdconvention.
Looks correct to me once the test fixture is corrected. @hivecommons-hive scanner lane: this is a one-line test fix on scanner/fix-280.

Correctness review (head dbb4b99)
The src/cli.ts change itself is correct: the --rebuttal check at src/cli.ts:246-249 runs before attach() (src/cli.ts:260) so no tmux side effect precedes the exit-2, --rebuttal= (empty) is also rejected, and the bare --rebuttal form is already caught by VALUE_FLAGS at src/cli.ts:61-80. Warnings at src/cli.ts:252-259 are additive and don't change exit codes, as #280 asked.
Blocking (in-scope): new test attach --rationguard --rebuttal=log forwards the flag without warning fails in CI on all three Node matrix jobs (run 39136978224: not ok 180 ... 1 !== 0, test/cli.test.js:310).
Mechanism: the test at test/cli.test.js:304-313 passes --rationguard without --rationguard-bin, but the harness's fake which at test/cli.test.js:43-49 resolves only tmux|pluk and fails otherwise ("so resolveRationguardBin falls back without probing npx"). resolveRationguardBin (src/attach.ts:205-210) therefore throws "rationguard not found on PATH" and attach fails closed with exit 1 — the exact behaviour the pre-existing test "attach --rationguard fails closed when rationguard is not on PATH" asserts. The new test can never pass as written.
Suggested fix: in before() add a stub rationguard script to stubBin (#!/bin/sh\nexit 0\n, chmod 755) and extend the fake which case to tmux|pluk|rationguard; alternatively pass --rationguard-bin=${stubBin}/rationguard in that test only. Then also assert the forwarded --rebuttal=log actually reaches the spawn if that's what the test name claims — currently it only checks for absence of "ignored" in stderr.
Advisory (non-blocking): the warnings are painted ANSI_RED with the label "Warning:" (src/cli.ts:254,257); consider a distinct colour so users don't read them as errors.

Style review (read at head 96a4db9) — approve; one advisory, nothing blocking.
- Warnings painted the same red as fatal errors, unlike the repo's existing warnings.
src/cli.ts:254,257renderWarning:viapaintStderr(ANSI_RED, …), the same treatment everyError:in this file gets (e.g.src/cli.ts:247). The two pre-existing attach warnings are plain, unpaintedWarning:lines (src/attach.ts:317,344), so on a colour TTY a non-fatal, exit-0--rebuttalwarning now looks identical to the exit-2 error directly above it. Suggest dropping the paint (matchingattach.ts) —src/ansi.tshas no yellow to reach for. Tests are unaffected either way sincepaintStderris a no-op off-TTY (src/ansi.ts:19-21). - Nit: the valid set
log, sendis spelled out twice in the guard atsrc/cli.ts:246-247and still cast atsrc/cli.ts:268(as 'log' | 'send' | undefined);parseFiltervalidates against a sharedPLUK_EVENT_TYPESconst (src/cli.ts:99,105). A smallREBUTTAL_MODESconst would let the guard, the message, and the type share one source. Optional.

docs-currency (reviewed at current head 96a4db9; dispatched SHA dbb4b99 has been superseded)
Runbook not updated for the new operator-facing messages (low, in-scope)
runbooks/attach-failure.md is the operator doc for exactly the two situations this PR changes, and it still predates them:
- Triage step 2 (
runbooks/attach-failure.md:16-19) enumerates the attach validation errors (Unsafe session name,CLI command cannot be empty, …) but not the new exit-2Error: --rebuttal must be one of: log, sendfromsrc/cli.ts:246-248. - The runbook's headline symptom — "exits cleanly but … the rationguard watcher is missing" (
runbooks/attach-failure.md:3-5) — is precisely the orphaned-flag case, and the newWarning: --rebuttal is ignored without --rationguard/Warning: --rationguard-bin is ignored without --rationguardlines (src/cli.ts:252-258) are now the signal an operator should look for. Neither the triage steps nor the "Common causes" table (runbooks/attach-failure.md:38-49) mention them.
Requested change: add one triage bullet under step 2 for the --rebuttal error, and one "Common causes" row: symptom Warning: --rebuttal/--rationguard-bin is ignored without --rationguard → cause "rationguard flags given without --rationguard, so no watcher is started" → action "re-run with --rationguard".
Out of scope (pre-existing): the new error advertises log as a valid value, but README.md:114 and the help synopsis (src/cli.ts:23) document only --rebuttal=send; nothing tells a user what --rebuttal=log does. Backlog candidate.

This appears to duplicate #282, which makes the same change to src/cli.ts for #280.
I read both diffs in full. Both insert the same two blocks at the same point in cmdAttach() (after the bare-session check, before attach({...}), base src/cli.ts:242-258): reject --rebuttal values other than log/send with exit code 2 and the message --rebuttal must be one of: log, send, then print Warning: --rebuttal is ignored without --rationguard / Warning: --rationguard-bin is ignored without --rationguard when --rationguard is absent. The message strings are byte-identical, both update the same two README rows, and both add a changelog.d/fixed-attach-*.md fragment. The src/cli.ts hunks overlap, so both cannot merge.
Differences I verified:
- #282 (
6170472) already carries a hiveapproveverdict and sits instage/100-merge-queue; its tests use the existingattach-orchestrationstub fixtures and cover empty values,SEND, and combined orphaned flags. - This PR additionally updates the
Usage:line (src/cli.ts:23→--rebuttal=log|send) and adds two rows torunbooks/attach-failure.md. Those are the only pieces #282 lacks and are a few lines to port.
Code here looks correct to me — same reasoning as #282; attach.ts:280 still resolves the rationguard binary before any tmux call, and the validation now sits ahead of that.
Flagging for a maintainer: if you agree, this one could be closed in favour of #282, with the usage-line and runbook additions ported as a small follow-up. I have not closed anything.

Closes #280
Summary
This PR fixes two issues with
pluk attachflag handling:Invalid
--rebuttalvalues now exit with code 2 before any tmux side effect. Previously, an invalid value like--rebuttal=autowould be passed to rationguard after tmux had already wired the session, leaving it half-configured. The validation now happens early, matching the pattern used byparseFilterand the bare-flag check.Orphaned rationguard flags now print warnings. When
--rebuttalor--rationguard-binare set without--rationguard, they are silently ignored (since rationguard isn't being started). Now a stderr warning is printed for each orphaned flag to help users catch configuration mistakes.Additionally, the README now clarifies that
--rebuttaland--rationguard-binboth require--rationguardto have any effect.Changes
