Review installer flows end to end

Walk through all installer flows in Hai from start to finish across supported platforms, document the current behaviour, and identify gaps or issues that need addressing before alpha.

I can test Single Board Computers, Mini PCs and Proxmox VE. I don't have access to the other two devices.

General

• Window decoration could be nicer. Right now it is a light bar on top of a black window on linux. Any way this could be blended?
• UI Nit: Please keep this window open during installation might be better under the loading bar or at the very bottom of the page.
• UI: The user should always see the previous selections when stepping through (e.g. Generic Computer / Direct install to SSD / x86 at the final step of 'Confirm')
• UI: I was able to install in on a 8GB sd card for the Raspi, but I think that's not enough space for that (the PI was not able to finish booting, stuck at 70% extraction of the image). I think 16GB is minimum and we should flag that. Generally, also for other steps, it would be nice to show 'supported' drives with color:
  • Raspi: red forless than 16gb for raspi install, green otherwise
  • Generic SSD: red for less than 16gb, yellow for less than 64gb (there are not really SSDs/HDDs with less than 64gb thus it is probably a USB Stick / SD card)
  • Generic USB Bootloader: red for less than 4gb? green otherwise
  • etc...

Loading Screen

• UI: Nabu animation seems a bit off? Looks like a nose? It transitions from middle to the right and back again... Should it be its tongue?
  

• UI Nit: Extraction no progress bar (instead loading animation - could this be converted?)

Home Assistant Hardware:

• not complete and should be completed before release. Currently 3 steps: Select Device, Connect, Done without step contents.

Raspberry Pi:

• 'Write failed: Permission Denied: Root access required. Please run with sudo.'
  • Fixed with Flash via udisks2 on Linux instead of requiring root #14
• Failure mode still allows for 'Try Again'. But it will just fail with the same error so I would disable that button for errors which are not recoverable.
• It redownloads the image every time. Could we cache it instead?
• On https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/ we list Raspberry PI as 'Expert' install method and list 'Docker and using CLI' as skills required, but we can install the HA OS on there too I think... (this is what the installer does) so this seems inaccurate. All listed devices could either be used as a docker install or HA OS install, no matter the device type. I think we need to update this page.

Mini PCs

• same as above - had difficulties on linux flashing before, but works with Flash via udisks2 on Linux instead of requiring root #14.

Proxmox VE

• to be tested

I Built from source on Windows without issue. The release executable also runs standalone on other machines without issue.

The Proxmox install fails at the upload step after downloading the latest image.

Checking this with Claude: the upload target is hardcoded to local storage, which on a default PVE setup doesn't have import enabled as a content type. The installer could check for this during the configure step and either enable it automatically or prompt the user to approve the change, rather than failing after the download.
