Note that below commands are executed in Ubuntu 18.04 for examples.
Update apt package index and install packages to use the repository via HTTPs:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install -y ca-certificates curl software-properties-common apt-transport-https gnupg lsb-release
Register 'Official GPG Key' of docker, and set up the stable repository:
$ sudo mkdir -p /etc/apt/keyrings
$ curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg | sudo gpg --dearmor -o /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.gpg
$ echo \
"deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/docker.gpg] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu \
$(lsb_release -cs) stable" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list > /dev/null
Install docker engine with the latest version:
$ sudo apt-get update # Essential to install 'docker-ce'
$ sudo apt-get install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-compose-plugin
$ sudo chmod 666 /var/run/docker.sock # If got permission denied to docker daemon socket
Install docker-compose:
$ sudo curl -L "https://github.com/docker/compose/releases/download/1.24.0/docker-compose-$(uname -s)-$(uname -m)" -o /usr/local/bin/docker-compose # '1.24.0' can be replaced with a specific version
$ docker-compose version
Now check that docker with compose is available:
$ docker ps
CONTAINER ID IMAGE COMMAND CREATED STATUS PORTS NAMES
$ docker-compose --version
docker-compose version 1.17.1, build unknown
