Highlights

Welcome to the release v1.140.0 of Immich, one more release, and one more day closer to 🐴 Stable-Day 🐴. This release continues the ramp-up effort to bring the beta timeline up to the same feature parity as the old one, while also addressing as many bugs as possible. Thanks to our active contributors, some cool features also made their way into this release. We encourage all Immich users to switch to the beta timeline and use it to help us identify and resolve issues. Let’s dive into the highlights of this release.

[beta] Background sync

The background sync feature has now been added to the beta timeline. New assets are now detected and pushed to an upload queue, which will be handled automatically by the OS.

Some tasks, such as local and remote data sync, now also run in the background periodically. So that, as soon as you open the app, the newly taken assets are immediately available on the timeline.

For those who have been using the beta timeline, please toggle the upload button off then on again to enable the background workers.

[beta] Read-only mode

For parents who have kids who want to look over photos but don’t want them to accidentally delete or perform any action on them, this feature is for you. By double-tapping on the profile photo in the app, you can only view assets in the main timeline, and all the action buttons will be hidden. Thanks, @Sud-Puth, for proposing and initiating work on this nifty feature!

Location management utility

Thanks to @Johannbr for putting in time and effort into this feature. You can now find and edit missing location data on a specific date. By going to Utilities > Manage location on the web, you will be presented with an interface to select the date to find the assets with missing GPS location and to update them in bulk

With the new Background Sync, are newly taken photos scanned in the background as well, or do I need to open the app so that the scan is done, and only the upload runs in the background?

That is precisely what this feature is doing! No need to open the app for uploads to get queued :)

I just updated the server and app and when I launched the app, the timeline section was completely gray. Couldn't get it to load any pictures. Didn't have any icons. Top bar kept disappearing too. Tried rebooting my phone with same issue.

I had to log out and log back in to get it back, figured I'd comment here in case anyone else has it happen. Working like a charm now

The new location management is great, really looking forward to improving the geo data on my old pics.

However some questions come to mind:
What happens when the geodata is set for an asset in an external library - I would assume the picture metadata itself is not modified, geodata is only stored in the immich db?
And perhaps written to the sidecar xml file if this is enabled?
Also, does this also work for assets shared in via partner sharing?

• for an immich-"native" library, the geodata is stored in the sidecar (xmp) file.

For an external library, the best option is to try it out and report back the behaviour.

Just tried it out on the external library. The behaviour is the exact same, a .xmp sidecar file is created.
Honestly, I wish there was a setting to choose whether to create the sidecar file or to edit the metadata (which I would prefer for example).

Thanks very much @Sud-Puth for your contribution!! I love photos & videos as a child-distraction method, but it’s always been tricky to stop them from messing things up. This is such a clever and unique feature and implementation!

Ha glad y'all like it, the feature exactly came about from this - I give my phone as the last resort and they are used to seeing past videos and photos rather than YouTube so this solves many things for me fwiw so I wanted to get a PR in cause this is open source. Immich is awesome and @alextran1502 and @bwees were the ones who frankly sat through and even did the changes and PRs reviews.
No other commercial image providers have this and this is definitely a game changer as immich now is my daily driver rather than other providers.

Hey folks, just wanted to tell you that the GPS "Manage location" feature is absolutely awesome!!! I love the workflow with clicking on an asset containing GPS info and transferring it easily to other assets. Thank you!
