Problem statement
Inventree suggests serial numbers for all trackable stock items to the user when adding or recieving stock items. This is very useful for parts which have "internally managed" (i.e. allocated by "us") serial numbers, but is meaningless for bought-in parts with "externally managed" (i.e. allocated by their manufacturer) serial numbers.
For the latter type of parts, this suggestion can be the cause of confusion and mistakes by users.
Suggested solution
Inventree no longer (after #11146) fills suggested serials by default when receiving stock, which was the most urgent cause of user error for us. I'd propose to go further, and either:
- (more complex) Add a toggle to parts which functionally controls "inventree should manage/suggest serial numbers"
- (simpler, less nuanced) Allow disabling serial number suggestions globally
Describe alternatives you've considered
This could be more generallised as a distinction between "internal" and "external" parts, possibly linked to specifical supplierpart or manufacturerparts, but I don't think there otherwise would be much benefit - and also this could lose flexibility where, for example, a part is manufacturered for "us" externally, but "we" are responsible for the serial numbering of it.
