Switch from OpenTracing to OpenTelemetry?

I'm wondering if there's already a plan to switch from OpenTracing to OpenTelemetry for the Jaeger middleware? If so, should it be done via a new middleware and leave the current OpenTracing implementation alone? Provide a configuration switch as to which to use ? Simply create a new one (eg: jaegerotel or something like that) ?
