Hi, I installed ibus, ibus-hangul and libhangul (using autotools).
The setup seems right, ibus works with the other languages. I am also able to open the setup of hangul ibus, select the options, enable hangul mode and so on. The only problem is that when i type on the keyboard, the characters do not change in korean symbols.

I noticed also that there is a command 'hangul' that is able to translate the word in korean, but the realtime translation do not work.

Do you have any tips in how to resolve?
(I'm using XFCE with X11.)

Thank you.

I found that you have to run /usr/libexec/ibus-setup-hangul. Start by runing ibus-setup. Select the 'Input Method' panel and select 'Korean - Hangul'. Some buttons to the right become active once you do that. Select the 'Preferences' button and it launches /usr/libexec/ibus-setup-hangul. The following is displayed:

Notice that the 'Start in Hangul mode' checkbox is checked. Once I did that, then I could enter a korean word with latin letters and have it translated on the fly. Also, you need korean fonts installed. I have

  • google-noto-sans-cjk-ttc-fonts-20190416-1.el8.noarch and
  • google-noto-cjk-fonts-common-20190416-1.el8.noarch

installed.

Hi @scarneysc, thank you for the reply.
I was able to start ibus-hangul in hangul mode, but it only works in some app. I have installed a gtk-editor application in which I'm able to write in korean with realtime translation. In other, like mousepad, the realtime translation does not work; I see only latin characters.

This happen on my XFCE build with Yocto. If I try to use ibus-hangul on Ubuntu, I'm able to write on Mousepad in korean with realtime translation.

What could be the cause of this behavior?

Did you install the korean fonts. We use google-noto-sans-cjk-ttc-fonts.

Also, after you enabled Start in Hangul Mode on ibus-setup, did you reboot?
