Installing invalid version of external introduces weird setup

If external has version v4, but has not v2 published. and we do external@2. It'll show errors. Still it'll link v4 to node_modules and reference v2 in package.json.

It should log error, ensure no version is linked in node_modules, and return with non-zero exit code
