Running the MCP server standalone?

Can the MCP server be run without using vs code? So you can have the server running locally let's say, and build your own agents to utilise it with semantic kernel? If so can we get some instructions on firing up the MCP server locally? I tried just running npm start, but there's no feedback for me to know whether it's running, not running, had an issue etc?

Today you must use a client tool like VS Code with GitHub Copilot.
