Bugs when switching from block to simple and vice versa

When switching from block to simple and vice versa and apply setting (as opposed to clear grid) things are not working as expected.
It seems for example that you cannot erase block lines while you are in simple mode.
You can't overwrite them either.

We probably should add tests for that mixed mode too.
