What version of Hugo are you using (hugo version)?

$ hugo version
image: hugomods/hugo:exts-non-root

Does this issue reproduce with the latest release?

services:
  server:
    image: hugomods/hugo:exts-non-root
    command: server -D
    volumes:
      - ./:/src
      - ~/hugo_cache:/tmp/hugo_cache
    ports:
      - 1313:1313

The current working directory probably isn't a Hugo project, - ./:/src mounts current folder into /src.

There is no mention on the site https://docker.hugomods.com/docs/development/docker-compose/ that any project has to be copied somewhere by hand.

What do you mean with " Hugo project" Where can I find it?

You should create a Hugo site first, see https://docker.hugomods.com/docs/development/prerequisite/
