A rough wondering on String vs native string (char*)

I was just wondering comparing to the existing type String,is there any reason/concens/disadvantage on not implementing a full rich function sets on the native type string (char*) with the super powerful language feature impl with native types,to the seamless compatiblity and maximum interop ability with c (as native power of zenc ,for ever) ,make zenc be "C today".
