@Hello-Linux I'm not an nginx expert but I believe you are missing a trailing semicolons in your config.

The configuration from https://www.netnea.com/cms/apache-tutorial-8_handling-false-positives-modsecurity-core-rule-set/ and the example in https://github.com/SpiderLabs/ModSecurity/wiki/Reference-Manual#secruleupdatetargetbyid are both for Apache HTTPD whereas you are using nginx.

UPDATE: My update may not really be helpful. Reading up on nginx+ModSecurity I see there's a ModSecurityConfig nginx directive and then inside that file you drop your ModSecurity directives (no semicolon needed)

@Hello-Linux I tried dropping in the example configuration from https://github.com/SpiderLabs/ModSecurity/wiki/Reference-Manual#secruleupdatetargetbyid into my nginx and didn't see the same issue. Can you upload your full modsecurity.conf and I'll be happy to test it on my side.

As for your initial question, I've noticed that the error message you're experiencing is due to the fact that some of these configuration options are currently being ported to libModSecurity. Although SecRuleRemoveById is available, the SecRuleUpdateTargetByID configuration (and siblings) are not currently available. I'll be tagging this at a higher priority for the stable release of libModSecurity.

Still, I believe you can achieve your goal of excluding a parameter from inspection for a rule by using ctl:ruleRemoveTargetById like so:
